Orchids are grown for the astonishing beauty and variety of their flowers. The most beautiful are the gorgeous South American cattleyas, with their often huge, sparkling, rosy-purple and mauve blooms; these are the aristocrats of the orchid world. Others have an altogether different appeal; these are the strangely weird, sometimes evil-smelling species, which are found among the bulbophyllums in particular. In between these two extremes are numerous delightful orchids of unlimited charm and desirability. It is from among this multitude of varieties that the vast number of collections is made up.
